»leise, schwach«: Das musikalische Fachwort wurde im 17. Jh. aus gleichbed. it. piano entlehnt, das auf lat. planus »flach, eben« (vgl. ↑ plan) zurückgeht. – Dazu gehört die Steigerungsform pianissimo »sehr leise« (17. Jh.). – Mit dem Adjektiv formal identisch ist das Substantiv Piano »Klavier«, das als Bezeichnung für das »Hammerklavier« aus dem älteren Pianoforte (18. Jh.) gekürzt ist. Dies ist aus gleichbed. frz. piano-forte entlehnt, das seinerseits aus it. pianoforte übernommen ist. Das »Pianoforte« – dafür auch mit Umstellung der Wörter »Fortepiano« – wurde nach seiner charakteristischen Eigenart benannt, dass man seine Tasten im Gegensatz zu Spinett und Klavichord sowohl »leise« (= piano) als auch »stark und laut« (= ↑ forte) anschlagen kann. – Zu »Piano« gehört die Bildung Pianist (19. Jh.; aus gleichbed. frz. pianiste) zur Bezeichnung des künstlerisch ausgebildeten und in der Öffentlichkeit auftretenden Klavierinterpreten (im Gegensatz zum bloßen Klavierspieler).
